SUMMARY:Cancelled: Quantifying Carbon Stocks On Conserved Land
DESCRIPTION:2020 Maine Land Conservation Conference Cancelled – “Although exceedingly disappointing\, we must put the well-being of our communities first\, which means complying with state and federal recommendations not to hold large gatherings.”\n— Maine Coast Heritage Trust\n\nSustainable land management practices improve the carbon capture potential of land\, thus are an important local solution to reduce the effects of global warming. At the 2020 Maine Land Conservation Conference on Saturday\, April 25 in Topsham\, ALT\, with Bates College students\, Kristin Pelletier and Eric Viera\, will present a workshop titled\, “Quantifying Carbon Stocks On Conserved Land”. The presentation will review a recent collaborative research project to quantify the carbon stock on select conserved properties in and effort to demonstrate and communicate the value of land conservation to local climate efforts. \nThe 2020 Maine Land Conservation Conference will have a strong focus on climate change and resilience. Regisration & FMI: https://www.mltn.org/conference-2020/ \nFull Workshop Description: \nBecause of how efficiently ecosystems such as mixed wood forests and wetlands store carbon\, conserving these lands is intrinsically tied to carbon sequestration. Given the urgency of reducing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide\, it is important to implement sustainable land management strategies to protect against deforestation and improve the land’s sequestration potential (Lacher et al.\, 2019). Land trusts play a big role in this effort\, and the value of this work is not widely understood. \nIn Fall 2019\, Androscoggin Land Trust (ALT) worked with a small team of students at Bates College for a capstone project with the aims of quantifying the carbon stock on select conserved properties in a manner that could be replicated by other land trusts and academic partners\, and additionally\, to communicate in a meaningful way about how conserved land plays a role in mitigating climate change. \nWorkshop attendees will gain insight on the preliminary results of this project\, and lessons learned. They will also leave with links to access the final report and lab manual outlining the methods and techniques of data collection. \nPresenters:\nKirsten Pelletier\, Student\, Bates College\nEric Viera\, Student\, Bates College\nJulia Harper\, Associate Director\, Androscoggin Land Trust

This is a mellow and scenic round-trip paddle from Auburn to ALT’s David Rancourt River Preserve in Lewiston and back to Auburn. You just might see an eagle or two. \nPut-in will be at the North River Road Boat Launch in Auburn (behind Wendy’s).  The group will paddle about 1.75 miles (total round-trip is approximately 3.5 miles) to the David Rancourt Rancourt Preserve\, just below Deer Rips Dam\, take a short hike on the preserve\, and then back to North River Road Boat Launch.  The current along this stretch is slow unless you choose to paddle up into the rips.  Meet at 8:30 am at the North River Road boat launch (behind Wendy’s on Center St. in downtown Auburn).  Bring your kayak or canoe\, sunscreen and bugspray\, and plenty to drink\, and meet us at the North River Road Boat Launch at 8:30AM! \nPut in and take out: N44°27.977′ W070°13.513′ \nNotes: Put in at the North River Road launch in Auburn and paddle about 1.75 miles upstream until you reach a small sand beach on the Lewiston side of the river.   Current is slow to non-existent because the put-in is just above Great Falls Dam and the Rancourt River Preserve is just below the Deer Rips Dam. Join for lunch at Rolly’s Diner in Auburn for lunch after the paddle. \nClick below for map.\nhttp://goo.gl/maps/TYj3Y \nFMI about the Source to Sea Trek and to make a voluntary donation to support ARWC: http://arwc.camp7.org/event-3342448

DESCRIPTION:**Based on the latest forecast of wind chill values as low as -4 and gusts as high as 45 mph\, we are cancelling the Riverlands State Park Snowshoe Hike event on 2/9/19** \nWe will miss exploring beautiful Androscoggin Riverlands State Park with all of you\, please check out our other upcoming invents including the Spruce Mountain Sled-in and Full Moon Snowshoe at French Falls. \nCANCELLED: Hikers can choose to do the 2.2 mile loop to the picnic meadow and back\, or continue on to complete a 4-mile loop trek. Come ready to explore the beautiful Androscoggin Riverlands State Park! \nWhat to bring: snowshoes\, water and a snack\, warm clothing (layers suggested). Meet us at the Riverlands State Park parking lot located off Center Bridge Road at 10am. \nWe will have approximately 20 snowshoes available to borrow thanks to Maine IF&W. Please contact ALT in advance if you are interested in borrowing a pair: 782-2302 or info@androscogginlandtrust.org \nThe State Park was once a quaint Turner village that was destroyed in 1927 by rising waters caused by the construction of the Gulf Island dam. In the mid-1980s\, the potential sale of this vast parcel of land along the Androscoggin River in Turner left a cherished local landscape vulnerable to development. Compelled toward action\, a small group of area residents began brainstorming ways to preserve the land as open space and to maintain its longstanding public access. Drawing upon the expertise of statewide conservation organizations\, they succeeded in securing funds from the fledgling Lands for Maine’s Future Program to purchase the land\, which was then transferred to the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands for management. Today\, the Androscoggin Riverlands State Park is the fifth largest in the state park system\, a 2675-acre expanse that offers miles of public trails\, river access\, year-round recreational opportunities\, and significant natural habitat for wildlife. This successful grassroots effort at land protection was the catalyst for the creation of the Androscoggin Land Trust (ALT) in 1989 as a vehicle for continuing conservation efforts in the region. \nHope to see you there! \nYou can check out these links for more information about Androscoggin Riverlands State Park: \nWebsite\nHistoric Brochure\nAndroscoggin Riverlands State Park Guide

We will depart at 10 AM from the entrance on Tall Pines Drive. There is limited parking directly next to the entrance to the preserve and more parking available in the parking lot to the housing complex across the street from the entrance (please park closer to the road in the lot) and along Tall Pines Drive. \nWhat to bring: snowshoes\, poles (optional)\, water and a snack\, dress warm and preferably in layers. \nWe will have approximately 20 snowshoes available to borrow for this event thanks to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife! In 2007\, with help from the Land for Maine’s Future Water Access Fund\, the Androscoggin Land Trust purchased this 14.3-acre parcel of land from the City of Lewiston. The preserve was soon thereafter named in memory of Deputy Rancourt\, a man whose affinity for the river and dedication to his country and community will forever be appreciated. \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:GMOW - Fall Foliage Paddle at Riverlands State Park
DESCRIPTION:Join the Androscoggin Land Trust to celebrate fall and the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend with a paddle on Gulf Island Pond\, along the shore of the Androscoggin Riverlands State Park. \nThe paddling trip will depart from the boat access on Center Bridge Road in Turner at the northern end of the park\, and include a round trip of approximately eight miles depending on the weather and water conditions. Paddlers will follow the shoreline of the state park. We’ll take a short hike on the Homestead Trail\, midway\, to see foundations of old farmsteads\, all that is left of a thriving community flooded out by the construction of Gulf Island Dam in 1927. Then we will paddle downriver to an island\, have lunch\, and turn back. The Riverlands was first conserved in the early 1990s by conservationists who played a role in creating the Androscoggin Land Trust. \nYou can arrive at 10am. Please bring your own boat and paddling gear (life vests mandatory). Bring wind/rain/sun protection gear\, binoculars\, camera\, water\, and your lunch. You do not need to register in advance. \nPaddle will be held rain or shine\, unless conditions are treacherous. For directions and more information about the park\, visit www.maine.gov/androscogginriverlands. The Center Bridge boat access is between the entrance to the park and the Greene-Turner Bridge.  Look for a small blue sign with a boat on it.

SUMMARY:National Trails Day - Celebrating Land Stewards!
DESCRIPTION:ALT protects roughly 5\,000 acres of forest and farmland and over ten miles of Androscoggin Riverfront\, and we couldn’t do it without the dedicated work of our volunteer stewards!  On National Trails Day\, we would like to show our appreciation to the volunteer stewards who\, over the years\, have helped ALT maintain its high standard in land protection. We’ll enjoy breakfast at the outdoor classroom at Sherwood Forest Conservation Area\, and we’ll also celebrating the recent installation of new signage on this trail system – scheduled to be completed in Spring 2018. \nWe welcome those interested in learning about our stewardship program as well. You can learn about the stewardship program\, what ALT has been busy working on over the past year\, and hopefully hear stories about experiences land stewards have had at the properties they help protect. \nWe will meet at the 19th street entrance where the kiosk is located (behind Sherwood Elementary School in New Auburn) at 10 AM and take a nice hike through the forest (under half a mile) to the outdoor classroom near a pond where we will have breakfast\, and enjoy the beautiful scenery. \nDirections: Follow South Main Street to New Auburn to the intersection with Cook Street. Take a right onto Cook Street and follow until the intersection with 19th Street. Take a left onto 19th Street and follow until it dead-ends. Park on the side of 19th Street and the trailhead will be on your left.

SUMMARY:Member Snowshoe Hike
DESCRIPTION:ALT members\, we hope you can join us for a snowshoe hike on Sunday\, March 4!\nFor several years Judy Marden\, long-time ALT board member\, has hosted Androscoggin Land Trust’s Members Only event! If you are not currently a member\, it is not too late to join before the event!\nJudy will lead the group on about a 2.5 mile snowshoe hike through the trails on Clark Mountain at the Marden-Chittick Refuge in Greene\, her 200+ acre parcel of conserved land protected forever by an ALT conservation easement. At this event\, we challenge members to bring at least one new member; someone who hasn’t joined yet\, but that you think might really enjoy being a member of ALT. \nAfter the hike everyone is invited to come back to Judy’s c.1795 farmhouse to sit by her old Glenwood B woodstove and enjoy chili\, mulled wine\, hot cider\, good company and other treats! Bring your snowshoes if you have them (if not please let us know when you RSVP)\, water\, warm clothing (preferably layers) a friend or two\, and come ready to mingle and enjoy the outdoors! \n \nPlease register soon because we can only accommodate 30 guests! Reserve your spot by emailing us at info@androscogginlandtrust.org or by calling the ALT office at (207) 782-2302. \nWe are grateful for your support of ALT and hope you can join the fun! \n
